CPD Matters
"A recent Ofsted report (Ofsted, 2006) described the most effective practice for CPD in schools as a logical chain of procedures that places CPD at the heart of schools' planning for improvement and SIPs. Improved teaching and learning and raised standards were found in schools where performance management, self-review and CPD have been integrated (Ofsted, 2006). However, developing effective links between the work of CPD leaders and school improvement takes time (DfES, 2005). Evidence of effective practice suggests it is crucial that CPD is effectively led and managed in schools (TDA, 2007)."
Professional learning for school staff is not only an entitlement but, with the revised Performance Management regulations for teachers, it is also an expectation.
"....all teachers should have a professional responsibilty to be engaged in effective, sustained and relevant professional development throughout their careers and a contractual entitlement to effective, sustained and relevant professional....The best teachers, school leaders and support staff constantly seek to improve and develop their skills and subject knowledge. Ongoing engagement in effective CPD is at the heart of our plans for unlocking the talent of the school workforce....We have big ambitions for children. We need to be equally ambitious for the school workforce that works with them. We already have a high quality school workforce. Our aim is that it should be the best."
